How to start Interior designing business?
Interior design is the art and science of enhancing the interiors, sometimes including the exterior, of a space or building, to achieve a healthier and more aesthetically pleasing environment for the end user.
An interior designer is someone who plans, researches, coordinates, and manages such projects. They are supposed to convert an empty residential or commercial spaces into fully functional, efficient and aesthetically pleasing home or office.

Creativity, efficiency and aesthetics are the keywords in this business. For this business you have to have a creative mind and special ability to visualize things and present it in a way that your customers understand. You also have to have the leadership quality because you will be managing and coordinating with different people both in your team and outside (contractors, supplier, clients etc).

Naturally, you also have to build a team that’s ready to take up the challenges of designing and decorating homes and offices. Complete interior designing projects on turnkey basis, requires a big team to handle everything. You may need to have architect, interior designers, technicians, painters, plumber, carpenter, electrician, labour and sales executives, back office staff etc.

  1. Registration of business: There are various options in India for business registration -
          1. A proprietorship
          2. One Man Company
          3. Partnership firm
          4. Limited liability partnership
          5. Private limited
You may have option to choose any of the above. Apart from this you have to obtain service tax registration, shop and establishment license for your business.
  1. Attractive office set up: Design simple desks, bring in good office chairs, do some minor design and art work on your own (you are interior designer, show the creativity). Depending on the team size, you may start even in a 300-500 square feet office space. You may rent it out and it need not to be in a high rise commercial complex in the beginning unless you have won some contracts.

Another Good place to start could be sending out emails, broadcasting your message on facebook, twitter, connecting with your old customers and see if they want to get some other work done, or if they know one someone who you can help.

  1. Taxability under Service Tax
No specific definition has been provided in respect of present services, however, the following clarifies the ambit of the present service:

  1. Interior Decorator Services pertains to services in relation to planning, design or beautification of spaces whether man-made or otherwise. CBEC vide Circular F. No B- 11/3/98-TRU, dated 7.10.1998 has clarified that services only in nature of advise, design or beautification are chargeable to service tax under this head and not the actual execution of work.

  1. Activities such as plumbing, civil and carpentry work done are not covered under the taxable head of Interior Decorator services as held by the Tribunal in the case of Space Decorator V Commissioner of Central Excise[ 2007 (008) STR 0362 (Mumbai CESTAT)].

  1. General Exemption under Service tax:

Small Service Provider: Vide Notification No 33/2012-ST, dated 20.06.2012 – Exemption to Small service providers having taxable turnover of less than 10 Lakhs and providing services other than by way of under a brand name.

Services provided to SEZ: Vide Notification No 40/2012-ST, dated 20.06.2012, all taxable services received by a Unit located in a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) or Developer of SEZ for the authorized operations, has been exempted from the levy of whole of the service tax.

There is no specific exemption on interior designing services.
